A new industry benchmark reveals that Allianz has surged to the top of the insurance sector’s AI maturity rankings—displacing AXA from last year’s #1 spot—in the second annual Evident AI Index for Insurance. The London-based intelligence platform, which tracks AI adoption across financial services, analyzed 30 large insurers and reinsurers and found that one in every 50 employees at these firms is now an AI specialist—a testament to accelerating talent investment amid broader workforce contraction.
The Evident AI Index evaluates AI maturity across four weighted pillars: Talent (45% weight), Innovation, Leadership, and Transparency—each measuring distinct dimensions of responsible, strategic AI integration. While the full index scores remain confidential, Evident publicly ranks firms by overall position and pillar performance. Notably, Allianz and AXA—both “composite” insurers offering both property/casualty and life coverage—dominated the Talent pillar, claiming the #1 and #2 spots respectively. Allianz leads with the industry’s largest AI talent pool: it employs 28% more AI professionals than AXA, per Evident’s count.
The report underscores a sharp industry inflection point: although overall insurer headcount has declined slightly, AI-specialist roles grew by 32% year-over-year. This hiring surge reflects intensified focus on building internal capability—not just deploying third-party tools. As Evident notes, “the volume of AI-specialist roles expanded by 32% over the past year,” signaling a structural shift toward embedded AI expertise.
Chubb rounded out the top three AI talent leaders, reinforcing its reputation as a U.S.-based innovator in underwriting automation and claims analytics. Among reinsurers and P/C-only carriers, Munich Re, Swiss Re, and Travelers ranked highly in overall maturity—though none cracked the top five in the Talent pillar, where composite insurers hold a clear advantage due to scale and cross-line data strategy.
Importantly, the index emphasizes *responsible* AI advancement: Transparency—the extent to which firms articulate ethical frameworks, governance, and bias mitigation—is a core pillar, not an afterthought. Leadership commitment is also quantified, tracking executive-level AI mandates, board oversight, and public AI roadmaps.
While Evident does not disclose absolute scores or raw data, its ranking methodology offers a rare, comparative lens into how insurers are operationalizing AI beyond pilot projects. With AI no longer optional—but foundational to risk modeling, customer engagement, and regulatory compliance—the race for talent is rapidly becoming the defining competitive differentiator in insurance.
